I welcome any chance to see more photos by Gary Winogrand. And Geoff Dyer''s mini-essays on the photos are wonderful. But the book's design and photo quality is unsatisfying. The pictures are unnecessarily small! If the designer had thought to turn the book sideways---with the spine on the short edge---the (mostly landscape format) photos could have filled the whole page, and thus have DOUBLE the area. It's an egregious design error. My sense is also that the reproduction quality on the photos is inferior to the quality in the MOMA New York and the SFMOMA Winogrand books. The images in the present volume seem a bit grayed out, with insufficient contrast and sharpness. Hardly what I'd expected from a deluxe, expensive photo book that's very heavy to hold...and annoying that about half that weight is blank white paper around the small photos. But, with all this said, after spending a few days with the book, I am getting to like it. In certain lights and angles the photos are readable. And the cascade of Dyers's text is king of hypnotic. After an hour or so, everything around me started to look like a Winogrand photo. I was in that world, where everything is interesting.

I'm a fan of Winogrand and street photography in general, so I was interested in seeing a 'deeper cut' of his works, beyond the many photos we typically see from him. I ended up being pretty disappointed with this book for a number of reasons. In its defense, this book does not contain a lot of the usual shots you may associate with the artist. However even with this in mind, I was not impressed with the curation of photos, many of them are not particularly interesting. This is made all the more painful by the format of the book which is to place a single, fairly small (5x7-ish) sized photo on one page of the spread, with the other page filled with arrogant philosophical paragraphs trying to analyze the work. The writing drones on in paragraph after paragraph, sometimes with elitist tangents about society in general, which seem very incongruous with the photos of Winogrand. Some books you don't love, but you take some pride in keeping them on the shelf for their photos and content, but this one I wish I had not purchased.

This book, as described in the author's intro, is based on a template that has been used before on other photographer's work. That is, a sample of work (100 images), one photo on one page and on the facing page a written narrative by the author related to the photo.The photos span much of Winogrand's career, so this could be a good introduction the younger photo aficionados to this photographer's work. Additionally, a good amount of information is presented in the back of the book as to the general dates that the photos were taken (with the limitations of non-digital data in the film capture) and locations. There is also a listing of all of Winogrand's previously released books, for those that may wish to dive deeper.There will never be a set of photos from a prolific shooter like Winogrand that makes everyone happy... only one hundred out of thousands, but this is a good sampling of the many projects he shot over many decades. I was surprised by several color images, and a couple obviously shot with telephoto lenses, since Winogrand and his wide-angle lensed Leica is well known to street photography fans.The narratives from Dyer range from very specific to the photo observations, to thoughts about the general subject. The thing is, they may or may not have anything to do with Winogrand's thoughts while actually taking the said photo. Nothing in the book indicates that Dyer ever actually met or worked with Winogrand, so you can give the narrative whatever value you wish.Physically, this is a very impressive book. The quality makes the price well worth to cost.

It's a decent book with some good info and I'm glad I got it. That being said, I personally do not like explications, explanations and "the meaning" of photos or any other art presented to me. I'd rather just have details on Winogrand's life and shooting style, rather than what this or that might represent in each photo. That's all subjective.

I like Dyer and I appreciate this collection, but in this book some of the essays feel as if he ran out of interesting things to say and thus felt the need to jazz things up with flights of fancy. The essays are not, in my opinion, going to be of much interest to most visual artists or street photographers. He also often comes off as a horndog in discussing images of women, for example stating (paraphrasing from memory) that in a given image it is obvious which of several woman is the real beauty (it is not) which I found to be more about Dyer than about the actual photographs and a little alienating.
